#03 Three Typical Small Solar Panel Designs for IoT Applications

Not all small solar panels are created equal. In our experience working with IoT product teams, three designs dominate the landscape.

1. Glass-Laminated Panels with PCB Substrate

These panels use a glass front sheet bonded to a PCB backing. The result is an extremely rigid, durable panel that can withstand harsh industrial environments. Typical applications include traffic sensors, industrial monitoring equipment, and outdoor signage. These panels often last 10+ years in continuous outdoor use.

2. ETFE Laminated Panels

ETFE is a fluorine-based polymer with excellent UV resistance and light transmission. ETFE panels are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and perform well in high-humidity or salt-spray environments. They are preferred for marine equipment, rooftop IoT sensors, and agricultural monitoring.

3. Flexible PET Panels

PET laminated panels are the lightest and most flexible option. They can be as thin as 1.5mm and conform to curved surfaces. These panels are ideal for compact IoT devices, portable environmental sensors, and consumer electronics where space is at a premium.

Matching Design to Application

The right choice depends on your operating environment, expected lifetime, weight constraints, and budget. At Geningtech, we manufacture all three types and can guide you toward the optimal solution.
